Writing Prompts

I found some cool writing prompts at a website I’ve been previously published at. I’ve used them with my students. I enjoy seeing what the children come up with.

Relay For Life

On Saturday the 21st my Mom and I walked the Relay for Life. This year the air was cool, with a slight breeze. It’s so cool to see all the young people walking the relay. It’s a nice way to pay tribute to my Dad who lost his battle with cancer a year in a half ago.

I wrote this poem in memory of my Dad. I took some of the words in a story that he began. The part regarding the village is from my Grandma. I spoke to her on the phone the day before she passed. She kept mentioning about all of us someday being together in a village. I imagine she meant heaven…

Here I Go

On Tuesday, I went to another Poetry Reading at Parkplace Books. I’m starting to get to know the other poets, which is really cool. I’m also getting more and more comfortable reading my poems and finding out which poems work and which poems need more work. Overall it’s an awesome experience.

On Monday, I plan to submit my picture book in verse…

“Younglings, younglings gather 'round.”

“Lost a planet Master Obi-Wan has. How embarrassing …”

It’s pretty amazing when children write. They have such good ideas. Not only do I give them advice in kindergarten and the writing class but they come up with amazing feedback for each other and me. The children enjoy getting into pairs and sharing one thing they enjoyed and one way to improve their writing. A first grader suggested that I add what my dream is in the dove poem so I added that to the poem:

Here’s a revision for my dove poem. I still can here the soft cooing in my ear. The air cool, before the summer unbearable heat…

Happy May!

Happy May! National Poetry Month was a great deal of fun for me as a reader, writer and teacher. This month I plan to submit a picture book in verse.

I just finished a YA book, Fallout, by Ellen Hopkins. A far cry to the verse that I’m writing but still an excellent book, her books inspired me to write poetry. I just started reading Newberry Medalist, Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse. So here I go…
