Did you ever hear about the gorilla at a mall in Tacoma? The story is brought life with the Newberry winning The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate. Overall a very fun and inspiring day.
On Saturday, I spent the day with my mom and fellow teacher, Cathy at the Western Washington University Literature Conference. It was the 10th annual conference and it was my 7th. There were three authors and one author/illustrator. Here is a link to find out more about these fabulous presenters: http://www.bellinghamherald.com/2013/02/12/2876418/hear-acclaimed-writers-illustrators.html and http://wwuclc.com/

On Friday, I went to Kirby Larson’s Book Launch for Hattie Ever After, a sequel to her Newberry Honor Book, Hattie Big Sky. The event was at Third Place Books in Lake Forrest Park. Kirby was one of my first writing teachers and is an excellent writer. I had a great time seeing her again and look forward to reading her book.
Here’s a link to her website: http://www.kirbylarson.com/ A few days late, at least at my school, but I enjoyed writing this poem: I never knew, but I’ve heard of poet, Jack McCarthy. He passed away on January 13th. Here’s one of his quotes from his poems:
Of all the lessons that history teaches there's one that's the saddest to know to hold onto the things we need to survive, we have to let some things go. --from Marriage in the Midst by Jack McCarthy From: http://us2.campaign-archive2.com/?u=f14ddba94c68d9dacd2109f12&id=1580cff0b6&e=478e68ea5b Here is another mini-book:
